Now, I know there's probably no one who reads this yet, but as we get closer to finishing the album and we get some hype going on our myspace (via videos and pictures among a few other surprises!), I'm sure we'll start getting a few more readers, that (if they are interested in the process) will back track and read from the start.
In any case, we've been in the studio for three nights in a row, and tonight will start off night four.
This is a brief outline of what the schedule has been so far:
Saturday September 15th: Set up drums, and completely tracked drum foundations for the 9 full band songs. Now, I'm not trying to brag, but I think these are some of the best drum tracks/sounds I've ever heard Jeff record. Kudos to him. (There are more than 9 songs on the record, but those were the only that needed drums). After a full day (approx. 11 hours in the studio) we packed it up, broke down the drums, and prepared ourselves to record bass and percussion on Sunday.
Sunday September 16th: We got in fairly early Sunday morning and immediately started tracking bass after finding a good tone. Believe it or not, tiny solid state Vox amps can get you a pretty great distorted bass sound! We laid bass tracks on about 5 of those above 9 songs when we realized something MIGHT be missing. The key being an actual bass player! So after making a few calls, we decided that we were going to hold off on the bass a bit longer. After that, we set up some mics for percussion. Tambourines, shakers, a tom drum with car keys, bells, and various other metallic objects attached to it, a Crashbox and Boombox (you'll know what I'm talking about when the album comes out) were used. A lot of fun, percussion has been completed. We set up some amps, got some preliminary guitar tones and went home after another long day (11 hours).
Monday September 17th: Unfortunately because I have a job, we had to all come in a bit later. We showed up at five and immediately got to work with the many guitars we had. (An old school Hollowbody Gtretsch, A 70's Gibson Marauder, a Les Paul, two Strats, an amazing sounding generic Brownsville, and I'm sure I'm missing one, haha). After that we laid down about 6 or so tracks of all rhythm, and got some EXCELLENT sounds. I'd have to say that I laid down some of my best guitar work yesterday. We shut it down at around 10 or 11 PM and decided to finish the rest of the rhythm today.
So now you know what's on the agenda, because I still have about five or so more songs to record rhythm on (remember, only 9 full band song).
gotta cut this short, so keep reading!
